Uganda
Day 244 03/09
Top of falls camp, Murchison Falls NP
22962 miles
We made it to Jinja for our first night in Uganda. We stayed out at Bujigali falls - a much more pleasant location than in town and plenty to do for the adrenalin junkie. We went white water rafting which was great. We enjoyed it better than the Zambezi, there were plenty of huge rapids but also enough gaps to catch your breath and enjoy being on the river. From Bujugali we went to Kampala for a day before moving on to Murchison Falls National Park. Murchison Falls is a lovely park with plenty to do. We caught a boat up the river to the base of the falls which was beautiful with plenty of hippos, crocs and birds for company. We also did a couple of game drives which were interesting and we saw plenty of game - the cats eluded us though. We are now camping at the top of the Murchison Falls which is a spectacular waterfall and worth visiting.
Day 251 10/09
Bunyoni Overland Camp, Lake Bunyoni
23 429 miles
We have now turned south for the last leg of our journey south. We've stopped off at Lake Nkuruba near Fort Portal and were treated to visits by the colobus and mangaby monkeys as well as some interesting birds - it was a really nice campsite, though basic. Our next stop was the Rwenzoris which, true to form were covered in cloud most of the time we were there, though we did get a glimpse of some of the lower peaks. We went on a walk in the foothills with two local guides which was very interesting and steep enough for us. The guys also managed to find a Rwenzori chameleon for us which was a real treat to see. We are now at Lake Bunyoni which is a crater lake which is apparently 6500ft deep - I won't be trying to find the bottom!!
Day 256 15/09
Bunyoni Overland Camp, Lake Bunyoni
23 589 miles
Yes, we're back again. We went up to Buhoma for a couple of days to try and glimpse the mountain gorillas. Someone had told us that one of the groups regularly wanders through the campsite so we were hoping not to have to fork out the US$500 to see them. Unfortunately when we got to the campsite we were told that the gorillas hadn't been there for a month so instead we dug deeply into our pockets for the experience. After a long trek through thr forest undergrowth we found the family taking a lunch time nap. We were really close and it was an amazing experience to be so close to these huge beasts - well worth the money. We are now spending a few days back at Lake Bunyoni before heading to Rwanda.
